Lonestar Duals Still On!

UPDATE: Lone Star Duals still on, but no Division I participation

By Jason Bryant
Amateur Wrestling News

The story posted earlier today on the status of the Lone Star Duals was incorrect.

Based on information sent out by the Sports Information offices at the University of Oklahoma and Duke University, it was implied the entire event had been cancelled.

After a follow-up call to Lone Star Duals tournament director Jeff McCall, AWN learned the event was still on, but there would be no Division I teams present for the 16th annual event held at South Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, Texas, just south of Arlington.

Several Division I programs were initially scheduled to attend.

The college portion of the Lone Star Duals will feature a field of NAIA and NCWA teams, while the high school dual meet portion will feature teams from half a dozen states, which McCall says, “might be the best high school field we’ve had.”

For nearly two decades, the Lone Star Duals have provided Texas wrestling fans an opportunity to see some of the top college programs in the country wrestle side-by-side with high school programs from within the state and around the country.

The Lone Star Duals is known for its extreme hospitality and efficiency. It’s long been regarded as one of the top hospitality rooms in the country, featuring 24 deep fried turkeys and a spread that rivals any Las Vegas buffet.

The competition on the high school side featured a boys dual meet tournament, a girls individual tournament and dual meets between college wrestling programs in Division I, II, III and the NCWA. It had been a fixture for programs like Oklahoma for the past 16 years.

It’s also been a homecoming for Texas wrestlers to compete in their home state like Tervel Dlagnev and Marty Usman from Nebraska-Kearney and Will Rowe from Oklahoma, among others.

The publication of the tournament’s cancellation rests on the shoulders of Amateur Wrestling News, and regrets jumping the gun on the announcement and apologizes for the confusion this may have caused based on the limited information available at the time.
